2nd Edition of Pedal Through Heritage, 3rd June 2023, New Town
The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized the "2nd Edition of BCC&I Pedal through Heritage", a unique Heritage Cycling Tour supported by the Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal, East Kolkata Wetlands Management Authority and New Town Kolkata Development Authority on Saturday, 3rd June 2023 from 6 a.m. onwards on the twin occasions of World Bicycle Day (June 3rd) and World Environment Day (June 5th). Through this initiative, The Chamber wanted to build awareness on the ecological sustainability of the wetlands around the Newtown area. These wetlands play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance essential for the sustenance of biodiversity. Through this cycling tour, the objective was also to promote the issues of air pollution and how bicycles are considered efficient to mitigate the challenges caused by the same.
The Heritage tour started with a flag−off ceremony from New Town Business Club, via Chacker Bherry the tour took a U− turn and headed back to New Town Business Club. The tour was flagged off by Shri Debashis Sen, Chairman, New Town Kolkata Development Authority, Shri Kaliyamurthi Balamurugan, IFS, Chief Environment Officer, Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal, Col. Indrajit Roy, General Manager, New Town Business Club along with Mr. GM Kapur, Chairperson of the Heritage Committee, BCC&I and State Convenor of INTACH. A total of around 60 participants representing Government, Corporates and academia joined the tour.
Mr. GM Kapur, Chairperson of the Heritage Committee, BCC&I said,” We the Heritage Committee of The Bengal Chamber is commemorating the World Environment Day as well as the World Bicycle Day today. A sustainable transportation system that includes and celebrates cycling, is necessary today in order to reduce the environmental impact caused by carbon and other emissions is necessary to preserve the environment as well. Physical well−being of the health of the individual as well as the environment can be looked after simultaneously by the cycling initiative.”
The second edition of the Heritage Cycling Tour was presented by Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal supported by East Kolkata Wetlands Management Authority (EKWMA) and New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA); and Partnered by Motovolt India Pvt Ltd, A Tosh & Sons (India) Ltd, Swach Environment Pvt Ltd, A.L. Logistics Pvt Ltd, San Global Scientific OPC Pvt. Ltd, Chowman Hospitality Ltd, AMRI Hospitals, Jute Story− Rakshak Foundation, Hermes Voyages Pvt Limited. The entire initiative was very well covered in print, digital and electronic media. The initiative was well appreciated by all participants.
